Functional Capacity Evaluation

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an intensive assessment that uses evaluation instruments whose reliability and validity have been peer-reviewed and the results are compared to work production standards. It focuses on physical abilities, restrictions and tolerances with respect to musculoskeletal strength, mobility, speed and endurance. The evaluation can occur over the course of one or multiple days and also addresses issues such as physical effort, reliability of client reports, job-specific barriers and a client’s general functional profile. It also attempts to provide recommendations to improve the client’s general and/or work productivity.

Furthermore, a more in-depth Biomechanical analysis using the Functional Assessment of Biomechanics (FAB) system can be utilized during the FCE. Data can be recorded for the entire assessment, yielding full biomechanical analysis of the client’s movements throughout the day. Objective measurements such as velocity, acceleration, torque and force at the body’s joints can be analyzed and determined. This data can then be used to help identify risk factors for potential injury with real objective data and measurements and not only subjective observations. Moreover, the objective data can be used to help better answer the question of whether or not a worker can safely work in his/her present occupation, as well as sustainability of the job in the future. Further information on FAB can be found here – (www.biosyn.ca).

Life Care Planning/Minimal Cost of Future Care Assessment (LCP/MCFC)

This assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that addresses the reasonable, yet essential needs of a client who has experienced a catastrophic injury or has chronic health needs. Its goal is to provide recommendations to maximize the client’s level of independence, maximize their ability to participate in society and prevent further functional deterioration and/or medical complications. It addresses the client’s current needs and those that span their lifetime.

If the primary concern is regarding the client’s employability or obtaining a baseline level of physical and functional abilities and restrictions, then it may be that a FCE will be a sufficient source of information.

When there are concerns about the client’s future/ongoing care needs, we at Harbourview Rehabilitation feel that a combination evaluation which includes both a FCE and LCP/MCFC assessment is the best approach. This arrangement allows for a more comprehensive profile of the overall client’s abilities, restrictions and function regarding their present and future care needs with respect to vocational (work) and avocational (non-work) residual capacity.
